Set up in 1988 by two pensioners - Alan Taylor and Peter Kenny who believed that, provided older people are given the necessary information and advice, with support at difficult times, they would be able to remain independent. By working with and for older people we:
- link people together, and with other organisations, to help meet their needs and aspirations
- provide information in a variety of methods, responding to the array of individual needs
- refer to appropriate organisations providing specific advice
- respond to identified needs through arranging specific projects, activities and social and learning opportunities
- represent the views of older people in various decision making forums.

To ensure older people maintain their dignity, independence and wellbeing.

Programmes and Activities-

We recruit and train volunteers who, together with paid staff, provide help, advice, information and support on any issue relating to older people. In promoting the interests of older people, Pensioners Link provides:

- newsletters
- coffee mornings
- exercise and relaxation classes
- Tai Chi
- information books/publications/leaflets
- stress therapy
- computer classes
- arts/crafts classes
- Spanish classes
- counselling service
- awareness/information days

It also works closely with the Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre/ Helpline and Wigan Independence Advice Centre.

Two relatively new projects are Reach Out and Activities Takeaway.

Reach Out aims to identify isolated older people within the community, partner them with a volunteer who will work at their pace, building up trust and confidence and encouraging them to join in local activities.

Activities Take Away aims to develop our existing services and provide localised activities to enable more easy access for older people. Again, this would be undertaken by recruiting and training volunteers.
